Safe Schools, Safe Future: A Collective Call to Protect and Empower Our Children

Child abuse and exploitation remain staggering challenges in Nigeria, and Rivers State is not exempt. Reports and community feedback continue to show alarming instances of child neglect, physical and emotional abuse, sexual exploitation, and forced labor. These violations often thrive because preventive measures are weak, school environments are not adequately sensitized, and communities lack proper structures for early detection and intervention.

Yet, one of the most powerful tools we have in safeguarding children is education. Schools are not just centers of learning; they are frontline defenders of children’s rights and dignity. With the right awareness, surveillance mechanisms, and support systems, schools can help stop abuse before it starts.

This is the heart of the “Safe Schools, Safe Future – Child Rights Awareness & Protection Program”, an initiative of Solution Social Initiative (SSI) in partnership with leading child protection agencies. The project is designed to strengthen child rights awareness across 15 schools in Rivers State, build the capacity of teachers and peer educators, and establish school-based surveillance mechanisms to detect and respond to abuse.

By embedding child rights education within schools and aligning with Nigeria’s Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 and the Federal Government’s Safe Schools Declaration Programme, SSI is taking proactive steps to ensure that schools are not just safe places for learning but also protective environments for growth, empowerment, and future opportunities.

The project is timely. With the Federal Government and UNICEF reaffirming their commitment to safe schools, this initiative positions Rivers State as a front-runner in translating policy into action. It creates a model that can be replicated nationwide, ensuring that no child is left unprotected.

But making schools truly safe is not the job of one institution alone. It requires collective efforts – from government agencies, civil society, international organizations, faith-based groups, the private sector, and individuals who believe in a child’s right to safety and education.

Together, we can turn the tide against child abuse by transforming schools into safe havens of learning, empowerment, and protection. Every contribution, partnership, and voice counts in building a future where every child learns without fear and grows with dignity.
